The Water Warriors Hydra is a small, air-based water blaster released by Buzz Bee Toys Inc. in 2011; it is basically a recoloured and renamed Water Warriors Barracuda. Oddly, the Barracuda was never fully tested at iSoaker.com. However, based on the results of the comparison between the Water Warriors Stingray and Water Warriors Goblin, the Water Warriors Hydra, being apparently of the same mold, likely performs the same as the older Water Warriors Barracuda. Being larger than Water Warriors Goblin, the Water Warriors Hydra makes for a more potent back-up blaster or sidearm in most water wars.

The Blaster ::

Nozzle ::

The Water Warriors Hydra's nozzle produces a decent-size, smooth stream for a pistol-class blaster. As expected, the Hydra uses its pressurized reservoir and flow through the intake tube. Similar in size to the older Super Soaker XP 40, the Hydra pushes out streams of virtually identical output with good lamination.

Pump ::

The pump on the Water Warriors Hydra is forward mounted and pumps smoothly.The pump grip, itself, has a bit of shape to it making it easier to hold. Pumping is as expected for a blaster of this size and the reservoir can be pressurized fairly quickly. One just needs to take care and not leave the pump rod extended as doing so will increase the likelihood of potentially damaging the pump.

Triggers / Grip ::

The trigger on the Water Warriors Hydra pulls smoothly though the trigger has an odd shape to it, making it feel a little tighter in terms of space available due to the angled portion at the base of the trigger. The nozzle valve responds well to pulls on the trigger, though there is a slight lag when first firing if this blaster was previously empty due to the air in the intake tubing; priming water blasters is always recommended. The grip area, itself, is open though the grip's handle is a little short. While this means no restriction for those of larger hand sizes, some would likely have preferred a longer handle to give a place for one's pinky to grab on more comfortably.

The Reservoir ::

The Hydra's reservoir holds a respectable amount of water for a blaster of this size. Holding slightly more than the Super Soaker XP 40, the Hydra offers decent soaking potential. The main drawback to the reservoir is its mostly opaque design; determining how much water remains and what the optimal angle to hold the blaster when water levels are running low then relies more on experience and trial-and-error as there is no easy way to clearly see how much water remains. The reservoir is closed by the standard plastic-ring-tethered cap which works well so long as it is tightened properly.

Overall ::

As a whole, the Water Warriors Hydra is a decent, larger pistol-sized blaster. Slightly front heavy, but offering respectable power for a small soaker, the Hydra's only real shortcomings come primarily from its limited total size. Overall, the Hydra should serve well as a decent back-up blaster or as a primary soaker in smaller skirmishes.

Pros

Simple design with clean lines. Decent power for a pistol-sized soaker.

Cons

Being a small soaker, has limited output and capacity. Trigger grip area a little on the short side.

Review:

The Water Warriors Hydra is most recent addition to my armoury as of June 2011. It is a large PR pistol class gun, though if you don't have a holster the Hydra is pushing it. Despite the fact the Hydra is a remake of an old gun, (the old Water Warriors logo is visible on the Hydra) I am still pleased with it. Once filled, it is quick to pressurize. The pressure release vavle is easily heard too so you know when to stop pumping, unlike my neighbors Point Break. Once pressurized, the Hydra releases a 1.2X stream that can go up to 35 feet, which is sad considering my Arctic Blast can only shoot 35 feet. The stream last for a good 10 seconds, and is powerful for the first few. The Hydra is not without it's faults, however. The trigger, while comfortable to me, can be uncomfortable to one with larger hand and finger. The Hydra also needs a grip extention. It barely accommodates me, and if my hand were much larger the grip would not be very comfrotable. However, the goods far outweigh the bad, and the Hydra is an excellent purchase, especially considering the other two 2011 pistols, the Goblin and Point Break, and many more faults than the Hydra. Buy one!
