The Nerf Super Soaker X-Treme Hydro Pack is a new backpack accessory for the 2013 Nerf Super Soaker line. It appears to be a backpack reservoir akin to the Super Soaker Aquapacks for the Super Soaker Max-Infusion series of 2006, but with fitting for the magazine/clip-based water blasters of 2011 to 2013.

The Reservoir ::

Backpack ::

The Nerf Super Soaker X-Treme Hydro Pack offers Nerf Super Soaker water blasters that use the magazine clip system to tap into this 3L (100oz.) reservoir instead of the standard clip or drum. Blasters such as the Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm, Tornado Strike, Lightningstorm, Arctic Shock, Shotwave, and Switch Shot. Unfortunately, none of the blasters that are compatible with the Nerf Super Soaker X-Treme Hydro Pack offer a significant output or power rating; the one blaster that could have made better use of this reservoir, the Nerf Super Soaker Hydro Cannon, unfortunately does not use the magazine clip system.

The backpack, itself, appears made of a decent-strength weaved nylon and is soft and fairly comfortable to wear. The cap easily unscrews, but is tethered to prevent its loss. The tether is on the short side and tends to pull the cap back over the opening, though. As this backpack is soft, one must be careful not to accidentally squeeze it when filling, otherwise one will end up with a lot of water coming out through the cap's opening. When filled, the backpack has a fairly cylindrical feel, but since it ends up resting between one's shoulder blades if worn properly, it remains comfortable to wear. The fact that it only holds 3L (~100oz.) also means that it does not weigh one down, though admittedly, one often wants backpacks to have greater capacities since the weigh is distributed nicely onto one's shoulders as opposed to one's arms.

The cap of the backpack does not have a hole to let air in. Being a soft backpack, as water is draw out of it, the backpack simply collapses as needed.

Magazine Adapter ::

To be compatible with the Nerf Super Soaker magazine-using water blasters, the adapter end of the Nerf Super Soaker X-Treme Hydro Pack looks like half a magazine/clip. Like the other clips and drum reservoirs, the adapter has a small image of a blaster and an arrow on it to denote which side is front. The adapter then can e slid easily into the blaster, giving the compatible blaster access to the 3L (100oz.) reservoir. This said, though, the X-Treme Hydro Pack does not expand capacity; it replaces it. Of course, the removed clip can be kept as a back-up.

This adapter was tested with the Nerf Super Soaker Arctic Shock. While attaching the adapter went smoothly, removing it from the blaster was not as smooth as expected. In fact, the adapter would get jammed in the blaster, requiring a decent amount of wriggling and nudging the release slider numerous times to have it come free. This jamming problem seemed to occur every other time the adapter was attached.

Overall ::

As a whole, the Nerf Super Soaker X-Treme Hydro Pack is a nice backpack reservoir idea in theory, but its usefulness is limited by the water blasters it is actually compatible with. The adapter has some sticking issues, but generally the backpack reservoir works as it should and offers blasters a good deal more capacity than the magazine clips or drums offer.

Pros

Nice styling, decent build. Soft backpack comfortable to wear.

Cons

While decent, 3L (100 oz.) is not a huge amount of water, especially when compared to many older water blaster models. Adapter sometimes sticks in blaster and needs to be jiggled around to be freed.
