Released in 2023, the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray is a pump-action water blaster made by Hasbro Inc. The unique feature of this water blaster is that its three nozzles pivot up-and-down during pumping, creating wavy streams, hence its name.
The Packaging .:
The Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray comes minimally packaged in a stand/based box that allows it to stand upright on a shelf with a cardboard wrap that loops over the top of the body. Ties are positioned beneath the cardboard wrap to keep the water blaster attached to the box. Thanks to the design, the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray's grip region is open and can be felt without needing to remove the packaging.
The front of the packaging (on the water blaster's right side) notes that the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray unleashes "Wild Wave Soakage". The advertised tank capacity on the packaging is 30 fl. oz. (887 mL). There are panels on the back of the packagng notings its pump-action blasting. The box, itself, feels sufficiently sturdy.
Design .:
The Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray has a clean, functional design with distinct colors highlighting different parts of the water blaster. This blaster also displays a nice, colorful mix of teal, orange, and yellow.
Build and Ergonomics .:
Admittedly, we did not remove the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray from its packaging for testing, thus there are some minor limitations to having a true sense for how this water blaster feels when unwrapped. Nevertheless, the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray appears sturdy and well-built with its forward-mounted pump able to move well, though the pump length feels short given the overall size of this water blaster. Its trigger-grip area is open and able to accommodate virtually any hand size comfortably. The nozzle angle mechanism is driven by the pump, thus rate of oscillation is tied to rate of pumping. There is no way to disengage the wave feature if steadier streams are desired.
While there are many older water blasters that produced a variety of streams from spiralling streams (Super Soaker Helix (2004)) to adjustable spread streams (Super Soaker XP 85: Triple Shot), we currently cannot recall any that made streams oscillate up-and-down as the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray does. Granted, every water blaster can mimic this by simply angling one's water blaster up and down when blasting; in fact, one has many more options and much more control when doing this manually. Nevertheless, the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray's triple oscillating streams is somewhat amusing and likely enjoyed more by younger users.
Overall .:
In the end, the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray is a fun, pump-action water blaster that is easy to use and its wave-like blasts add some spray variety to the field. However, there is no way to simply allow normal pump-action stream generation if desired while range and capacity are limited. Likely outclassed by most larger pump action and pressurized water blasters, the Nerf Super Soaker Wave Spray is perfect for light games or for younger water warriors.
Pros
Easy to use pump-action-based water blasting; increased area covered during blasting due to nozzle action
Cons
Limited capacity; limited output; no way to disengage wave mechanism
