The Super Soaker Aquashock Hydro Blitz is the largest blaster released by Hasbro Inc. in 2007. Unlike the Super Soakers seen in the past several years, the Super Soaker Hydro Blitz has rather unique styling and features. As well, the Super Super Hydro Blitz is also the largest Super Soaker released since the CPS 4100 in 2002.

The Blaster ::

Nozzle / Firing Chamber ::

The Hydro Blitz features two nozzles: a stream nozzle and the larger "Multi Blastin' Bursts" Blitz nozzle. The way the Hydro Blitz is configured, by toggling the selector switch, water from the primary chamber firing chamber can be either sent to the stream nozzle or diverted towards the Blitz nozzle system. The stream nozzle is powered directly from the primary firing chamber. As the primary firing chamber holds a good amount of capacity and power, the shot time and strength in the main stream lasts an impressive amount of time while delivering a good strength, though limited output stream. On the other hand, the Blitz nozzle is powered by a secondary firing chamber.

The trigger on the Hydro Blitz only controls whether water can flow from the primary PC into the secondary firing chamber. Only when the secondary firing chamber fills enough will it then open the Blitz nozzle to release the entire secondary chamber in a sudden burst. From a full primary PC, the Hydro Blitz tested could fire 7 bursts before needing to be refilled. As the secondary firing chamber must be filled by the primary PC, the secondary firing chamber must be less potent than the primary one, otherwise it could not be filled. Unfortunately, this also means that the Blitz nozzle has less power behind it than if it were powered directly from the primary PC as seen in the Super Soaker Flash Flood or Super Soaker Arctic Blast. Perhaps the biggest problem with the secondary firing chamber not having a separate trigger controlling the nozzle is that it is rather difficult to empty for storage. The chamber must be filled with enough water for the Blitz nozzle to fire. However, draining remaining pressure involves toggling the selector switch back and forth between the stream and Blitz nozzle setting in order to push out the remaining trapped water.

Pump ::

The Hydro Blitz features a rather different lever-style pump. This pump design adds to the Hydro Blitz's visual similarity to a minigun, but does not feel as easy to use as a typical forward-mounted or barrel-mounted pump. Interestingly, this is the first dual-stage pump used on a Super Soaker, actually pushing water when the pump is moved in either direction. The lever gives better leverage when pumping, perhaps making it easier to pressurize the main firing chamber. Oddly, the actual volume pumped for each half-stroke is actually only half the volume pumped on a typical Super Soaker, thus a full forward and back motion ends up moving as much water as a single pump of the average single-stroke pump. It would have been better had the overall pump volume been increased by 50% to 100%.

Triggers / Grip ::

The trigger and grip area on the Hydro Blitz is located at the upper, back position of the blaster. While the size and feel of the trigger and grip appear solid, the positioning makes holding the Hydro Blitz rather different than holding most other water blasters. The Hydro Blitz cannot easily be supporting by holding the pump and trigger grip regions, especially when the blaster is fully loaded. Instead, this soaker must have its shoulder strap properly adjusted to support the majority of the weight. As the center of gravity on the Hydro Blitz is still closer to the middle, this means that the blaster's trigger region prefers to be behind one's body if the blaster is simply hanging by the strap. Unfortunately, operating the trigger positioned behind one's torso is not as comfortable, thus some energy is needed to hold the blaster in a more-forward position such that the trigger lines up or is in front of one's torso.

The Reservoir ::

The reservoir on the Hydro Blitz is located on the mid-to-rear lower body of the blaster. The amount of water the Hydro Blitz holds is respectable for a blaster of this size. On top of this, the Hydro Blitz features Max-Infusion technology, allowing an additional 3L Aqua Pack backpack reservoir to be attached if available. This gives the Hydro Blitz a very respectable potential capacity. Being Max-Infusion compatible, the reservoir cap is larger, has Quick-Fill capability, and is threaded backwards compared to most other caps. The cap can also be fully removed if desired, but there is no tether or anchor to prevent its loss if removed.

Overall ::

As a whole, the Super Soaker AquaShock Hydro Blitz is a large, intimidating blaster that has some good features, but feels on the heavy side, particularly given the power available from either of its nozzles. The stream setting allows the user to fire a long time on a full PC while the Blitz setting gives good area coverage, though its output is on the lower side. The main problem with the Hydro Blitz is that its weight combined with its design makes it somewhat different and more energy consuming to hold and pump. Thankfully, being CPS-based, the Hydro Blitz can still easily compete against the majority of air pressure and small CPS-type blasters out there. Just be wary if facing off against significantly more powerful soakers that feature 5x or larger true stream nozzles.

Pros

Intimidating styling, decent build, and has a dual-stage pump. Stream shot time and performance impressive while Blitz setting pulses cover a good area while not squandering water too quickly. Has shoulder strap. Max-Infusion Aquapack compatible for potential doubling of reservoir capacity.

Cons

Dry weight of blaster on the heavy side. Pump design and trigger/grip placement means weight of blaster must be supported by the strap; carrying the blaster by the pump handle and grip alone is not recommended; aiming and pumping motions not as natural as with standard-shape water blasters. Output from Blitz nozzle limited for a blaster of this size and weight. Secondary firing chamber difficult to properly empty after use.

Review:

The Hydroblitz is the biggest super soaker ever made by Hasbro since the soaker tag CPS 4100 re-release. It has two modes, the burst mode and the stream mode. When fully pressurized and settled on the burst mode, it shoots 5 bursts (It says 4 on the package, but mine usually shots 5, and some even got 7) of about 150ml each within 4-5 seconds. It is also possible to shoot one at a time, so you can switch between the two modes when pressurized (oddly, some water squirt out of the small nozzle when you switch on the stream mode).

On the stream setting, it has a ~3x nozzle with a shot time of about 17 seconds, which is really good I think. It also holds a great amount of water, enough to release a lot of bursts. Add an aquapack and you'll have an endless water supply (only if you can afford one with your gun, because the hydroblitz alone is fairly expensive: 49,99$ here in Canada) About 27-30 pumps are needed to fully pressurize the weapon, 7-8 pumps to shoot one burst, and like on the FF, only 2-4 pumps to get the stream's max range. 

With a full reservoir you can shoot a total of 20 bursts (4 full charges), and finish the remaining water with few seconds of 3x stream. I noticed how useful is the ability to switch modes when pressurized, you can shoot one burst, than shoot 5 secs on 3x, then shoot some more bursts, etc. Something superior over the FF's single riot blast.

On the negative side, the Hydroblitz is somewhat strange to use. Although it seems to pressurize easily, I get tired quickly of pumping this blaster. The pump handle feels weak, but you don't need to force it much so I think it won't break if a reasonable force is used. It is hard to tell when the blaster is fully pressurized, because even if you pump it 60 times, you won't hear any PRV sound. It has two different strap hooks (I noticed that it is impossible to remove the strap up front, possibly because it is near impossible to use and hold this blaster without a strap), but unfortunately both ways of attaching the strap are not so comfortable because the hydroblitz is soooo heavy when full.

Overall, I think the hydroblitz is a great weapon from Hasbro, but it could have been a lot better for its price, size and weight. If you liked the flashflood, you'll like this new soaker. Because, performance wise, think of the hydroblitz as a huge FF with multiple riot blasts.

Lets wish for more potent CPS supersoakers for 2008. (the 1998 CPS line will be 10 years old next year......HINT HINT)

Review: The Hydro Blitz is the best gun I'v ever used. It's bulky-nes is vary scary. Instead of a huge Flash Flood, it does them rapid fire. (nice touch Hasbro) This way you can just launch one so it doesn't use the whole pressure tank.

Pros: The Flash Flood nozzle is smaller then the one on the Flash Flood, but it can soak more with rapid fire. Has a strap so you can swing it onto your back. The strap is also good for letting it dangle and using both hands to pump. Very scary size, might scare enemies off.

Cons: Some of you might look at that as a bad thing because you want to blast them, then have them run away. Very heavy, with cps chamber and reservoir filled to max, it weighs 16 pounds! It also takes a long time to fill.

ps I think it probaly rivals the Monster XL!
