iSoaker.com Rating System Updated - Some visitors may have noticed that the various stock water blaster review pages were updated. The biggest change so far is the revision of the iSoaker.com water blaster rating system. This is the first change to the way statistics are presented on iSoaker.com in many years.
Formerly having only four categories, the system now covers six criteria, namely:
- Power
- Range
- Encumbrance
- Ergonomics
- Capacity
- Overall
On top of the addition of the Range and Ergonomics ratings, the scaling for blaster size is removed for all but the Overall rating, making it easier for comparisons to be done between any size of blaster. Most ratings are based on objective measurements, but are adjusted based on additional factors. The most subjective rating, of course, is the Overall rating as it is based both on my experience with water blasters of various makes and models as well as my own ideas on what an ideal water blaster would be.
What remains to be done with the revised rating system is to provide a sense of expected or optimal numbers given a particular weight class, but I'm holding off putting up numbers until I've had more time to look at how the measured water blaster statistics line up.
For more information on the revised rating system, see the updated iSoaker.com Statistics page.

More Super Soaker gear found by UrbanTaggers - Seems like those at UrbanTaggers found info on more upcoming 2013 Nerf Super Soaker products including the Nerf Super Soaker Flash Blast and the "Domination" drum (the water drum from the Nerf Super Soaker Lightningstorm), but sold separately. The Flash Blast appears to be a top-pumped spring-loaded pistol-sized water blaster.
See: Urban Taggers.: More Super Soaker gear. for pics.

Nov. 20, 2012: WaterWar.net downtime - As of this posting (~2pm EST), WaterWar.net appears to be down. Not sure what's going on; I've contacted the host and am awaiting their reply. Seems like the server that hosts WaterWar.net along with some other sites is down at the moment. I've submitted a support ticket and sent a request using their online form, but unfortunately their online chat support is not available at the moment, thus this downtime may be a little longer than usual. Hopefully, things will be back on soon. Will update this as I get more info/insight into the problem.
Sidenote: this outage also takes down iSoaker.net as well as a few other sites I have colocalized on that server. This is one reason I keep iSoaker.com on a separate server though it costs me a little more in hosting fees.
Update: ~3pm EST, WaterWar.net appears accessible again.
5: History pages updated - A little late in the year, but finally got around (more like remembered) to updating the Super Soaker History page and the Water Warriors Line History page. Regular visitors to iSoaker.com will already be well aware of the newest additions to both lines, but keeping the overall summary pages up-to-date is always a good thing.

Upcoming Nerf Super Soaker Products for 2013 - Seems like the folks over at Urban Taggers have found info on a number of upcoming Nerf Super Soaker Products.
Apparently, Nerf Super Soaker will be introducing more items to complement and expand their clip/magazine-using water blaster line.
Accessory items include:
Nerf Super Soaker Banana Clip - this is basically an elongated, banana-shaped magazine compatible with blasters like the Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm, Lightningstorm and Tornado Strike
Nerf Super Soaker X-Treme Hydro Pack - this is a soft backpack reservoir that has an adapter to attach to the Nerf Super Soaker magazine-using water blasters. It appears to hold 100oz. (~3.3L)
There are also small pictures of three new water blasters:
Nerf Super Soaker Arctic Shock - appears to be pump-action; reservoir may chill water and/or allow ice to be added
Nerf Super Soaker Shotwave - pump-action pistol-sized water blaster; comes with a standard magazine, but compatible with the X-Treme Hydropack
Nerf Super Soaker Switchshot - pump-action; comes with a banana clip and shoulderstock; additional feature unclear
Go check out the Urban Taggers posting for pics and other info.

1: Super Soaker Battlepack Limited Review and Pictures posted - Acquired a hard-to-find Super Soaker Battlepack backpack a little while ago. This item appears to be made by a company called Imaginings3 that possibly licensed the Super Soaker name from Larami Corp. 27: Acquired: Water Warriors Zzappers - Despite my best efforts, there are still holes in the reviews available on iSoaker.com for the major water blaster brands. Of course, whenever possible, if I can, I try to fill in the gaps. Recently, managed to acquire a couple of Water Warriors Zzappers.
For those who don't know, the Water Warriors Zzapper is the second largest of the air-pressure-based pistol-sized water blasters released by Buzz Bee Toys Inc. back in 2003. The ones I got are in newer packaging, but the styling remains true to the original. Will add in more information and post more pictures about this model soon.

13: Back-end Spring Cleaning (2012) - Over the past couple of weeks, I've mostly been busy at iSoaker.com doing a fair amount of back-end clean-up, setting up large numbers of redirections due to the significant amount of site re-organization that iSoaker.com has seen over the years. On the bright side, iSoaker.com tracks better how much specific redirects are used and I can readily verify that they are pointing correctly. I've also been able to identify problematic sections that were lost to time, but for some reason, cached sites or old search results across the web still point to obsoleted locations. Monitoring things, the number of 404s I'm seeing is dropping so the new redirections are having an effect.
Hopefully this means a better overall user experience for those visiting iSoaker.com.

23: Range Testing: 2012 Nerf Super Soaker water blasters - Finally got around to doing some range testing on the 2012 Nerf Super Soaker models.
Results now available for the following water blasters:
The Nerf Super Soaker Lightningstorm seems to perform slightly better than the older Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm. Other than that, ranges are all in the 6m-8m (20'-25') at best. While styling is nice, performance is far from what older generation Super Soakers could do.
2012 also marks the first year that the "Super Soaker" line lacks a new pressurized water blaster model, the thing that helped define the Super Soaker in the first place. Strange times we are in.
18: HydroBrawl Water Warfare updates - Looks like the HydroBrawl Water Warfare | Local Casual and Enthusiast Water Warfare website has updated and changed to a WordPress-based site! Also features a new log! Lots of good information there. Check it out!
16: The Water Warfare Handbook at Buzzbeetoys.com - The Buzz Bee Toys Inc. website has a new section on it: The Water Warfare Handbook. This new section offers a great primer for those newer to water warfare and has some fun ideas on potential scoring and water warfare game possibilities.
What makes this addition to the Buzz Bee Toys Inc. website particularly special is that it began as a concept about 2.5 years ago with three members from iSoaker.net (Samuel Y., "Steelboot.", and myself working on drafts of these pages starting in October, 2009). The information present served as the foundation for the materials found on these pages. While the draft, itself, was heavily edited, I believe the substance and spirit remain intact and the editing actually improves its accessibility to a wider audience. Most importantly, this is the first time I can think of that a water blaster manufacturer was willing to link directly to a water blaster review site, in this case, iSoaker.com.
Special thanks to those at Buzz Bee Toys Inc. who also put a lot of work and effort to help push this project through. It's really nice to see the culmination of a lot of work finally available to all who are interested.

15: Range Testing: 2012 Water Warriors water blasters - Finally got around to doing some range testing on the newer water blaster models.
Range test results now available for the following blasters:
Apart from the Water Warriors Steady Stream 2 that performs pretty much identically to the original Water Warriors Steady Stream, all the pressurized blasters perform quite well with each capable of pushing streams to the ~12m (40') mark. Check out the links above to see more specifics on each water blaster model.

8: Top Picks page updated - Current and preferred all-time favourite water blasters that I have had experience with now updated for 2012. I should note that while some may argue that there are currently available blasters that may fit into some categories listed, if a blaster does not meet my standards for selection, the category remains "N/A" until a more suitable blaster is identified.
Check out: Top Picks :: :: iSoaker.com.
6: Water Warriors Steady Stream 2 review posted - Last, but not least, of the 2012 Water Warriors water blasters, the Water Warriors Steady Stream 2 review is now posted. 2: Water Warriors Colossus review posted - The Water Warriors Colossus is the largest air pressure water blaster released by Buzz Bee Toys Inc. for 2012. Sporting a 3-option nozzle selector and a large, single air-pressure firing chamber, this water blaster offers solid performance. As with other reviews at the moment, range testing still needs to be done.

29: Water Warriors Viper review posted - The Water Warriors Viper is the smallest of the air-pressurized water blasters made by Buzz Bee Toys Inc. for 2012. The review is now online, though still need to do range testing. Range tests, though, must wait until the weather gets a little warmer. As I type this, it is currently snowing outside.

28: Water Warriors Steady Stream 2 Images posted - Finally got around to posting up pictures of the Water Warriors Steady Stream 2. While slightly smaller than the original Water Warriors Steady Stream, the Water Warriors Steady Stream 2 offers the same functionality; pump it quickly enough and one can create a solid stream akin to what a pressurized water blaster can. Pump less rapidly and it behaves like a piston-based blaster.

26: Gizmodo: The Super Soaker Lightning Storm Is A Water-Blasting Tommy Gun - These mini-sort of water blaster overviews on larger sites continue to show a lack of understanding of water blasters in general. This article (link below) even goes as far as stating that a 10' difference in range between a Lightningstorm and Hydro Cannon is not a big deal and that, somehow, the Lightningstorm has "double the water power". Double the water power? For those curious, here's a comparison between stats measured here at iSoaker.com for the Nerf Super Soaker Lightningstorm and Nerf Super Soaker Hydro Cannon. You guys can draw your own conclusions regarding whether the Lightningstorm really has double the power of a Hydro Cannon. For me, if forced to choose between these two blasters, it'd still be the Hydro Cannon any day.

17: Water Warriors (2012) Water Blasters Acquired - Just acquired a Water Warriors Viper, Water Warriors Python, and Water Warriors Steady Stream 2. Just need to get a Water Warriors Colossus to complete the list of new Water Warriors brand water blasters for 2012. Pictures and reviews to come, time permitting.
16: Lightning Storm Super Soaker carries the largest water drum yet - "The battery-powered Thunderstorm was a sweet Super Soaker pistol and the Nerf Hydro Cannon (pumping) could shoot a 19 ounce blast of water up to 35-feet, but both look like kiddy toys compared to the Lightning Storm."
Not sure who writes these sort of articles, but since the Nerf Super Soaker Lightningstorm is more-or-less a Nerf Super Soaker Thunderstorm with some accessories, this writer needs to get more educated on items before writing up these sort of reviews. Then putting down the Nerf Super Soaker Hydro Cannon in comparison to the Super Soaker Lightningstorm, that shows a significant lack of understanding of water blasters and water warfare.
On the one bright side, they did link out to iSoaker.com, so kudos for that.

11b: If you had this, no doubt you were a 90s child. And it was the best. : pics - Always nice to be linked to be Reddit-users. As for the accuracy of being a 90s child, does being >20-years-of-age in the 90s count? I suppose I had (and still have) a child-like disposition, especially when it comes to water blasters!
That said, I do find the current direction of the Nerf Super Soaker brand to be rather counter to the original, ground-breaking water warfare world the original Super Soaker 50 brought us into.
I do, however, remain optimistic about the future of water blasters, though.
Check out: If you had this, no doubt you were a 90s child. And it was the best. : pics.
11: Hasbro Resurrects the Classic Super Soaker 50 from GeekDad | Wired.com - While this article dates back to May, 2009, always fun to find online articles that link back to iSoaker.com. That said, as one of the comments in the article correctly states, the "classic" design of the original Super Soaker 50 was NOT re-released in 2009. Instead, we got something that has similar looks, but lacked the unscrewable bottle-type reservoir. It is much easier to fill a removable reservoir by submerging it in a bucket of water; can't do the same with an attached reservoir with a screw-on cap.
Check out: Hasbro Resurrects the Classic Super Soaker 50 | GeekDad | Wired.com.

Pressurization System Recategorization -
While perhaps not as detailed as some may prefer, for iSoaker.com, I will be adopting the following water blaster pressurization categorization system until a more preferred one if found or devised. It works better than the existing one, fits in with how the database querying works, and doesn't feel too heavy/overly detailed.
Primary Classes:
- Piston - for all finger and/or hand pumped water blasters. These include everything from syringe-type blasters to the small finger-pumped novelty water pistols
- Air - for all air-pressure-based blasters. Both pressurized reservoir systems and water blasters with separate air-pressurized firing chambers would fall into this category
- Elastic - for all rubber/spring/other elastic material-based water blasters. The term CPS is being removed from the categorization scheme. Presently, not opting to differentiate between elastic bladders, spherical versus cylindrical, or spring basedsystems
- Motor - for all motor-based water blasters. Presently, not opting to differentiate between motors that use rotary pumps versus motors that drive small pistons to pump water
- Hose - for all hose-based/hose requiring water blasters
- Other - for an pressurization system that does not fall into the above categories. The most notable one that comes to mind is the peristaltic system used by many Shield Blasters, but there may be others that are not coming to mind at the moment.
Modifiers:
While the categories above cover the fundamental pressurization systems, there are a number of water blasters that make use of multiple types of systems. As such, some water blasters may also be given an added modifier term in their categorization
- [class 1] [class 2] Hybrid - for water blasters that use two systems in tandem to generate a stream. Example #1: the Water Warriors Scorpion would be categorized as an Elastic Motor Hybrid. Example #2: the Water Warriors Steady Stream would be categorized as a Piston Elastic Hybrid.
- [class 1] [class 2] Combo - for water blasters that use two systems independently to generate a stream. Example #1: the Super Soaker Oozinator would be categorized as an Air Piston Combo
- [class 1] [class n] Novelty - for water blasters that are considered not particularly useful for typical water wars (i.e. keychain water blasters and sprinklers). This modifier is semi-subjective
The order of classes before a modifier is a little subjective, but is loosely based on the perceived primary method of action.
I should note that many back-end changes need to occur for this new system to be implemented on iSoaker.com. I hope to update the system in the near future, but there may be some glitches after it goes lives at first. Hopefully nothing too problematic and hopefully glitches can be quickly identified and fixed.
Soak on!

2b: 2012: Upgrades Continue - "February, 2012, begins the biggest back-end change to iSoaker.com since the 2008 conversion from ColdFusion to PHP. This is something I had considered doing for a year or so now, but this year just felt like the right time to make the change."
via History: 2009 to 2012 :: :: iSoaker.com.
2: Site clean-up continues - Big back-end changes result in the need for many additional changes. With more tools available, it is easier to determine incoming broken links and redirect them appropriately. As well, there were a number of out-going links that were outdated, most notably a number of links to iSoaker.net pages that are now housed at WaterWar.net.
However, making good progress so far. Will return to more true content creation soon, most notably reviewing my latest water blaster acquisitions.
1: Starting anew in 2012
Consider this the first real news update with the new iSoaker.com format!
Unlike other updates that mostly affected styling and organization, this update for Feb, 2012, changes some fundamental aspects of how iSoaker.com works. Granted, some sections, like the Armoury, remain as they were.
The choice to make use of the WordPress platform was something being considered for a few years now, but seeing how far WordPress had developed, I finally opted to bite the "soaker stream" (so to speak) and upgrade/change most of the article and story-type pages on iSoaker.com into WordPress format. The goal here is to make managing this content easier while making things easier to find. I'm also toying with the idea of opening up commenting on pages, but all in due time.
I also plan to use the various related WordPress tools to improve linking to other notable sites and pages of interest.
Of course, with all upgrades, there will always be some hiccups once the site goes live. I've spent the past little while after making this WordPress installation live troubleshooting some minor bugs, especially now that the main page of iSoaker.com is powered by WordPress.
For now, things appear to be running mostly smoothly.
Welcome again! Leave NO one dry!
